Vietnam Joins Hague Apostille Convention, Making Document Authentication Faster and More Affordable

CHICAGO, IL, UNITED STATES, September 11, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Vietnam has officially become a party to the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents, commonly known as the Hague Apostille Convention, marking a significant change in how U.S. documents are authenticated for use in Vietnam.

Effective September 11, 2026, qualifying U.S. public documents destined for Vietnam can be authenticated through the streamlined apostille process rather than the traditional multi-step legalization process.

Express Apostille Services (EAS) is now accepting qualifying documents for apostille processing for use in Vietnam, providing individuals, attorneys, businesses, and international organizations with a faster and more economical alternative to traditional document legalization.

A Major Change to Document Authentication

Vietnam deposited its instrument of accession to the Hague Apostille Convention on December 31, 2025. The Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) confirmed that the Convention entered into force for Vietnam on September 11, 2026. With Vietnam's accession, the Convention now has 129 Contracting Parties.

The Apostille Convention is designed to eliminate the need for the traditional legalization of public documents between participating countries.

Previously, a U.S. document intended for use in Vietnam could require multiple authentication and consular legalization steps. Under the Apostille Convention, qualifying documents can instead receive a single apostille certificate from the appropriate authority in the country where the document originated.

The result is fewer steps, lower costs, faster processing.

"Vietnam's accession to the Hague Apostille Convention is excellent news for anyone who regularly needs U.S. documents accepted in Vietnam," said Erin Yamaoka, CEO of Express Apostille Services. "Our goal at Express Apostille Services is to make international document authentication as simple, fast, and economical as possible. We're excited to now offer apostille processing for qualifying documents destined for Vietnam."

Express Apostille Services Can Now Process Documents for Vietnam

Express Apostille Services works with individuals, law firms, businesses, immigration professionals, relocation companies, and international organizations that need U.S. documents authenticated for use abroad.

With Vietnam now participating in the Apostille Convention, EAS can assist with qualifying documents destined for Vietnam, including:

* Powers of Attorney
* Affidavits and notarized documents
* Business and corporate documents
* Educational documents
* Court documents
* Birth, marriage, and other vital records
* FBI background checks
* Real estate documents
* Immigration-related documents
* Corporate authorizations and agreements
* Other qualifying U.S. public documents

Document requirements vary depending on the type of document, the issuing authority, and the requirements of the Vietnamese organization or government authority receiving the document.

Apostille vs. Traditional Legalization

The new process represents a substantial simplification for Americans and businesses with ties to Vietnam. Under the traditional legalization process, documents could require several authentication and consular steps before they could be used in Vietnam. The Apostille Convention replaces that process for qualifying documents with a standardized apostille certificate.

Traditional legalization:

U.S. document → Authentication → Additional legalization requirements → Vietnamese consular authentication → Vietnam

Apostille process:

U.S. document → Apostille → Vietnam

The simplified process can reduce administrative requirements, processing time, and costs associated with international document authentication.

Particularly Important for International Business and Relocation

The change is expected to benefit a wide range of individuals and organizations conducting business or managing personal affairs between the United States and Vietnam.

Documents may need to be authenticated for:

* Business formation and corporate transactions
* International investments
* Real estate transactions
* Immigration and residency
* Employment
* Marriage and family matters
* Powers of Attorney
* Education
* Estate and inheritance matters
* Legal proceedings
* International banking and financial transactions

For businesses and professionals managing multiple documents, eliminating the consular legalization stage can provide a significant reduction in administrative complexity.

Remote Online Notarization Adds Another Option

Express Apostille Services also offers Remote Online Notarization (RON) for eligible documents. With an RON, it's possible to conduct a remote online notarization with signatories all over the world - and now we can obtain the related apostille for Vietnam within a business day. This can be particularly useful for Powers of Attorney and other documents requiring notarization before apostille.
